Planting Potatoes, Hoeing and Irrigation

We planted out the rest of the potatoes on Friday. We had been holding back a bit on getting the potatoes planted as we were going through a cold spell. Even the early planted potatoes in the polytunnels got a bit frost bitten, despite being protected, but happily they are already starting to pick up. As well as lots of plantings this week (onions, lettuces, endives, broccoli, cauliflower, red cabbage), "the boys" also started hoeing beds - a sure sign that the season is up and going! We are basically in a drought, and have to irrigate all of our vegetable areas, which is a bit early in the season, and means extra work. In a future newsletter we can discuss water issues in a changing climate.
