Our aim at Zsámboki Biokert is to provide you with the tastiest, freshest, local seasonal organic produce we can provide. In order to offer you the best choice for the time of year of Hungarian grown organic produce, we work with a number of partners, so that we can have a good supply of organic vegetables and fruit year around. All our partners are all fully certified organic producers - some are certified with Biokontroll Hungária Kft (as we are), some with Bio Garancia. All of the farmers who supply us grow their produce in Hungary and we know them personally, and have trust in the way that they farm, so you can rest assured that all of the produce we offer is the highest quality, organic fresh produce available.
Why do we not grow all of the fruit and vegetables we offer ourselves?
Like any farm we have limited capacity. As a vegetable box scheme operating for many years, we have found that the only way to have a good supply of high quality, fresh produce throughout the year, is to work with other growers. Years ago we grew all of our own produce, but we were only able to offer a much more limited selection and to fewer customers. The way we work now much of the produce you get in your boxes is grown on our own farm, but not all of it
Who are the other farms who supply to Zsámboki Biokert?
We have several suppliers, aside from our own gardens, for example: Erdődi Imre, who farms near Debrecen, Gódor Antal és Éva, Galgahévíz, Németh István/Rábcakapi Biokertészet near Győr, Organic Kingdom from Kölcse (who supply some of our apples and other fruits), Szabó István (who also supplies us with apples), Rózsa Péter (jr.) and Rózsa Imre, who both farm in Balmazújváros, Bolvári Csaba and Papp Orsolya from Zsámbok.
What do Zsámboki Biokert grow?
We grow many different crops (around 50-60 crops over the course of the year). From April to October, the majority of the vegetables in your boxes are from our own gardens, but particularly in the winter, most of the stable stored vegetables we need in larger quantities we get from other organic farmers (e.g. potatoes, onions, Canadian squash, carrots). Most of the fresh, leafy, salad vegetables are from our own garden (e.g. spinach, salad crops, coriander, dill, basil, bunched carrots, etc.). Over the summer we grow a wide range of crops, including our delicious tomatoes, courgettes and carrots, amoungst many others. We are looking at growing larger quantities ourselves, but this is not always the most practical option.
So, please be assured that we do our utmost to supply the freshest, tastiest, local (Hungarian) seasonal organic vegetables and fruit to your boxes. We are the oldest running box scheme in Hungary, and we have extensive experience and knowledge of the Hungarian organic sector, especially for vegetable production.
